Memory
I am everything I am today because of my grandmother, “Avi”. This race is dedicated to her.
As the daughter of a single mother, I was raised mostly by my grandmother, as my mother worked up to three jobs at any given point to sustain us.
Elodia Riovega, my “Avi” was a famous Cuban actress known for her work in theater and radio. Upon arriving to the United States in the 60’s, she continued her career in acting, starring in plays, commercials, telenovelas, radio, and movies. She once played Antonio Bandera’s mother in the 1995 movie Miami Rhapsody, filmed right in the heart of Little Havana, on Calle Ocho and 13th Ave. (Look closely, and you’ll see me in the movie too!)
She was strong. She was compassionate. She was supportive.
I’m grateful for all the lessons learned, her patience and her guidance.
To my Avi in heaven watching down, this one is for you.
En Memoria: Soy todo lo que soy hoy gracias a mi abuela, “Avi”. Esta carrera está dedicada a ella.
Como hija de una madre soltera, fui criada principalmente por mi abuela, ya que mi madre tenía hasta tres trabajos en un momento dado para mantenernos.
Elodia Riovega, mi “Avi” fue una famosa actriz cubana conocida por su trabajo en teatro y radio. Al llegar a los Estados Unidos en los años 60, continuó su carrera en la actuación, protagonizando obras de teatro, comerciales, telenovelas, radio y películas. Una vez interpretó a la madre de Antonio Bandera en la película Miami Rhapsody de 1995, filmada en el corazón de La Pequeña Habana, en la Calle Ocho y la Avenida 13 (¡Míralo de cerca y me verás en la película también!)
Ella era fuerte. Ella fue compasiva. Ella fue mi apoyo.
Estoy agradecida por todas las lecciones aprendidas, su paciencia y sus consejos.
